Crape Myrtles

The summer-blooming favorite of Southern yards, loved and often over-pruned. Less is more.

Crape myrtles brighten the summer with long-lasting flowers in pink, red, lavender and white, and they have beautiful peeling bark in winter. They are tough, but they are also among the most abused trees in the South, cut back hard every year to knuckles.

Healthy crape myrtles need a modest hand: remove suckers, dead wood and crossing branches, thin gently and let the tree reach its natural size. If your tree has outgrown its space, the answer is usually a different variety, not a harder cut. A Certified Arborist can also help with problems like bark scale and powdery mildew.
