Choose the right tree
Match the tree to the sun, soil, space and purpose. Think about mature height and spread, root habit and what is overhead and underground. Native trees often do best.
When to plant
Fall is ideal in Tennessee, giving roots time to establish before summer. Spring is also good. Summer planting needs careful watering.
Dig the hole
Dig wide, two to three times the width of the root ball, but only as deep as the root ball. The root flare should sit at or slightly above ground.
Plant and backfill
Remove wire, twine and burlap from the top. Backfill with the soil you dug out. Water thoroughly and avoid heavy amendments.
Mulch and water
Add a few inches of mulch, kept off the trunk. Water deeply and regularly for the first two or three seasons.
Avoid common mistakes
Planting too deep, staking too tightly, over-fertilizing and ignoring the mature size are the usual culprits.
Right tree, right place, wide shallow hole and patient watering.
