What a certified arborist is
A certified arborist is a tree professional who has earned a credential from a recognized professional organization, usually by combining field experience with an exam, and who keeps it current through continuing education. It shows training in tree biology, pruning, risk and safety.
Verify credentials
Ask for the arborist's name and credential number and verify it with the issuing organization. A good company is happy to share it and to say who will be on your job.
Ask about coverage
Ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage and check that it is current. If a worker is hurt on your property, coverage matters.
Look at the plan
A good company explains what it will do, how, with what equipment and what is included. Be wary of anyone who proposes topping or wants to start without looking at the tree.
References and reviews
Ask for recent local references and read reviews. Photos of finished work and a visit to a completed job help.
Red flags
Door-to-door storm chasers, pressure to decide today, payment in full up front, no written quote and a plan to top your trees are all warning signs.
Ask for credentials, coverage and a written scope, and never agree to topping.
