How roots grow
Most roots are shallow and wide, spreading far beyond the canopy. They seek water and oxygen, which is why they are found near surfaces, gutters and pipes.
Driveways and sidewalks
Roots lift pavement when they grow under it. Options include rerouting the walkway, using flexible materials and, in some cases, careful root pruning.
Foundations
Roots rarely break solid foundations but can push on shallow footings and dry clay soil. Cracks should be checked by a structural engineer.
Pipes
Roots enter sewer and drain lines through cracks and joints. A plumber with a camera can tell you what is going on. Root pruning and pipe repair go together.
Root pruning and the tree
Cutting large roots near the trunk can destabilize or kill the tree. An arborist can advise on safe cut points.
Better planning
Plant trees far from structures and pavement, and choose species with less aggressive roots.
Do not cut big roots before asking an arborist, and plan new trees with roots in mind.
