How to Mulch Around Trees the Right Way

The simple mulch rules that help trees thrive and the mistakes that hurt them.

Why mulch

Mulch moderates soil temperature, holds moisture, suppresses weeds, builds soil and keeps mowers away from trunks. It is the most economical tree care you can do.

How deep

A layer of two to four inches is plenty. Deeper mulch can suffocate roots and hold too much moisture.

How wide

Spread mulch as far out as you can, ideally to the dripline. A wide ring is far better than a small one.

Keep it off the trunk

Pull mulch back several inches from the trunk so the root flare is visible. Mulch against bark invites rot, rodents and insects.

Which mulch

Shredded bark, wood chips and leaf mulch all work. Fresh arborist chips are great. Avoid dyed mulch of unknown origin and rubber.

Refresh, do not pile

Fluff old mulch and top up thinly. Adding a new layer on top of a deep old one builds too much.

Our advice in one sentence

Two to four inches, wide and away from the trunk.
