Stumps ground well below the surface, so you can plant, sod or build where a tree used to be.
A stump is more than an eyesore. It is a trip hazard, a hiding place for pests, a mowing obstacle and, in some cases, a source of suckers that keep trying to become a tree again. Grinding turns it into wood chips well below the surface, with no digging, no heavy equipment crawling across your yard and no hole left behind.
We use professional grinders sized to the stump and the access, from narrow-gate machines to large tracked units. We grind below grade, follow the surface roots outward, and then clean up the chips. You can plant grass or a new tree where the old one stood, or leave the area to settle as it is.
A rotating wheel with carbide teeth shaves the stump away in layers, working side to side and downward. Grinding usually goes several inches to a foot or more below the surface, depending on what you plan to put there. Stumps with big root flares may need extra passes.
Chips pile up as the stump disappears. We can haul them away, leave them to mulch beds or use some to fill the hole. Fresh chips can tie up nitrogen in the soil, so we suggest topsoil if you plan to sod or seed over the spot.
Before we grind, we mark buried utilities and sprinkler lines, and we ask about irrigation and wires. After grinding, we rake the area and leave it ready for loam, sod or planting. Any remaining roots will decay over time or can be removed separately.
If you plan to plant grass, a few inches of grinding is enough. If you plan to plant a tree, grind deeper and remove chips from the area. If you plan to build, talk with us about full removal.
