A careful way to make a tree smaller when it has outgrown its space, using proper cuts instead of topping.
Sometimes a tree has simply grown too big for where it stands: touching the roof, shading the whole yard or reaching toward power lines. Topping is the wrong answer, since it creates weak shoots and invites decay. Crown reduction is the right one: shortening limbs back to suitable side branches so the tree stays strong.
A Certified Arborist selects the cuts, choosing laterals that are large enough to take over as the new leader of each limb. We reduce height and spread gradually, in more than one season if needed, and keep the tree balanced. The result is a smaller tree that still looks like a tree.
Topping cuts branches to stubs with no regard for structure. Reduction cuts back to a lateral at least a third the diameter of the limb being removed. The tree can then redirect growth without a flush of weak, poorly attached shoots.
Most trees tolerate reducing the crown by a modest amount, often up to a quarter, in one visit. Larger changes should be staged. Some species and old, stressed trees handle reduction poorly and may be better candidates for removal.
Trees touching structures, trees too tall for a small yard, trees with long, heavy limbs and trees near lines are common cases. If a tree is the wrong species for the space, we tell you that honestly.
If a tree is simply wrong for its location, a small cut can only delay the problem. We discuss options: reduction now and removal later, a replacement planted nearby or a different design for the space.

No. Topping removes the leader and leaves stubs. Reduction shortens limbs to side branches that can take over.
Usually modestly. Large reductions are staged over more than one season.
Healthy trees usually do. We assess vigor and species before recommending it.
When the tree is the wrong species for the space, is declining or is too big to be reduced safely.
No. Some species and unhealthy trees do not tolerate it. We tell you when removal is better.
